ABOUT MARY
Mary Watkins is a contemporary artist based in Yorkville, Illinois, working primarily with oil on canvas. Drawing from her background in Theatre Technology and Fine Arts, she creates atmospheric figurative paintings that explore the relationship between light, perception, and human experience.
Inspired by stage design and dramatic illumination, Watkins builds immersive environments where light becomes both a visual presence and a way of exploring memory, emotion, and transformation. Her current work centers around the garden as a symbolic landscape. A place of growth and uncertainty, sanctuary and wilderness, where figures move through spaces shaped by both the visible world and the unseen.
Her paintings begin with poetry, personal reflection, and observations of the world around her. Through layered oil paint, she develops luminous surfaces and shifting atmospheres, allowing color, light, and form to emerge gradually. Recurring imagery of figures, hands, and natural spaces reflects her interest in the unseen experiences that shape how we understand ourselves and the world.
