ABOUT MARY
Mary Watkins is a visual artist based in Yorkville, Illinois, working primarily in oil on canvas. Drawing on her background in Theatre Technology and Fine Arts, she creates luminous figurative paintings that explore the physical and symbolic presence of light.
Her paintings, both figurative works and landscapes, are shaped by memories, personal photographs, and a fascination with how light transforms mood and memory. In her landscapes, she captures the glow of natural scenes and the shifting sunlight across familiar places.
Inspired by stage design and dramatic illumination, she constructs atmospheric surreal scenes in which light is as much a subject as the figures themselves, and recurring images such as hands, moons, and figures serve as symbols of how inner thoughts shape how we move through the world.
Across both styles, her work is guided by a fascination with light, movement, and shifting perspectives, how they can transform what we see and how we feel.
